Week 4 and 5: Soaking up Space

The colourful buildings that Puebla is known for was a recent initiative. The buildings of the cities central historic district were painted in various bright colours in the 20th century as a means of securing the city as a UNESO world heritage site, a title which was considered to help tourism and by boosting its identity as a beautiful colonial region. Puebla was once a transitory region during the colonial era, whereby all people and goods had to pass through the state on the way to other regions in Mexico, to the US or on route to Europe- this position meant that the state received taxes on all the goods that pass through, making it an incredibly affluent part of Mexico. Today Puebla is a production hub for many industries and has managed to maintain its place as a must see destination through fostering its beautiful churches (there are 365 of them!), history and colonial architecture.

Street Art is everywhere in Puebla… or rather Mexico (at least in the places I visited!)

And of course the people of Puebla, or anywhere, are worth getting to know! To read about some of the wonderful people I met in Puebla, as well as Mexico and beyond check out my project, People over Place which can be found elsewhere on my website.
